FRANGIPANI – PROPERTIES & BENEFITS

The frangipani is a shrub or tree native to Central America. Belonging to the Plumeria genus (after the French botanist, Charles Plumier), it produces a wide range of different flowers, ranging from yellow to deep pink. Its common name comes from an Italian marquis, Frangipani, who once used this plant in a perfume.

The red or common frangipani (Plumeria rubra) is very widespread in the Caribbean, where it grows in many gardens, as well as in the wild. While the shrub’s wood is used in marquetry, its delicate, stunningly beautiful flowers give off a subtle scent that is used both in perfume and in food. Frangipani flowers are reputed to possess a multitude of beneficial properties, be these soothing, invigorative, softening, purifying or nourishing. However, the quintessence of the frangipani flower is expressed in the olfactory power of their floral perfume, with almond-scented notes and a hint of vanilla.

Details about the main characteristics and traditional uses have been provided as information here above.

N.B.: The aloe vera extract and calendula contained in the protective, moisturizing formula enhance the soothing effects of the frangipani, while the sweet almond oil and mango butter complement its softening, nourishing virtues.

The melons used by LIGNE ST BARTH are grown beneath the sun of the Caribbean, where they ripen gently in the green fields. The region’s exceptional climatic conditions produce a high-quality, fragrant and sweet fruit. Packed with vitamins A and C, the fresh melon is peeled and cut by hand in the laboratory, before being used in our cosmetics. The softening, moisturizing and revitalizing virtues of its vitamin-rich flesh are prized within the cosmetic industry.

Details about characteristics and traditional uses have been provided as information her above.

N.B.: The hydrolysed soy protein within the formula boosts the soothing, softening and regenerative qualities of the aloe vera juice, while the latter reinforces the freshness and moisturizing properties of the melon extract.

PAPAYA – PROPERTIES & BENEFITS

The papaya tree (Carica papaya L.), which is widely cultivated in the Caribbean, is an evergreen shrub whose leaves are grouped together at the top, resembling a palm. Its fruit – the papaya – is rich in vitamin C and provitamin A, as well as vitamins E, B1, B2, B5, B9, potassium, calcium and magnesium.

The many ways in which the papaya is used in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries are linked to its papain content. Papain is an important proteolytic enzyme renowned for its effect on dead skin cells, promoting skin renewal and improving the texture of the skin. The Caribbean Indians used papaya as a meat tenderiser, and it is still used as such to this day in the West Indies. A decoction of papaya tree leaves was traditionally prescribed to aid digestion.

The latex in the plant has also been used for centuries due to its therapeutic properties. It is applied to irritated skin and wounds to disinfect them, soften the tissue and encourage regeneration of the cells. Compresses prepared with the flesh of the fruit also provide relief, heal burns and soothe rheumatism. Papaya also contains catechin (a powerful antioxidant found in green tea), which helps combat ageing of the skin.

Details about the main characteristics and traditional uses have been provided as information here above.

N.B.: LIGNE ST BARTH uses the flesh from fresh papayas from neighbouring islands. The enzyme-rich orange flesh is chopped by hand and its juice is extracted for use in our cosmetic formulas. The micro-pearls of jojoba wax reinforce the emollient and gentle the exfoliating effect of the papaya extract by naturally removing cell debris and pollution residue without being aggressive to your skin.

A must-have in any beauty regime, Peeling Cream with Papaya is the perfect way – once or twice a week – to kick off your morning ritual. Pamper your face by massaging onto wet skin using light, circular motions, before rinsing off thoroughly. The gentle exfoliating action of the jojoba pearls is the perfect treatment for the more delicate areas of your face, including your lips. Peeling Cream with Papaya leaves skin looking smoother, more supple and brighter.

PINEAPPLE – PROPERTIES & BENEFITS

A plant native to South America, the pineapple was introduced into the West Indies by the American Indians and was discovered by Christopher Columbus in Guadeloupe in 1493. It belongs to the Bromeliaceae family and is renowned primarily for its juicy, refreshing fruit. The name “pineapple” comes from the American Indian Guarani word, “naná naná”, which means “the perfume of all perfumes”. It was originally used in the West Indies as a poultice to accelerate the healing of wounds.

Rich in bromelain (an enzyme that breaks down large proteins), pineapples are reputed for their slimming properties. The fruit is prized for its ability to purify, soothe and restore radiance to your tint, reinforced by the exfoliating effect of the fruit acid it contains. The fruit’s sugars are renowned for their moisturizing and softening properties. As a natural source of vitamins, fruit acids and enzymes, fresh pineapple is an excellent foodstuff as well as the perfect partner for your skin. Used in cosmetics, it is reputed for its antioxidant, regenerative, moisturizing, smoothing and draining properties.

GREEN CLAY – PROPERTIES & BENEFITS

Used for thousands of years, clay is a mild, naturally occurring mineral product. It is the result of a long process of erosion taking place within the natural environment. Produced from the combined action of wind and water, it is extracted from the ground, dried in the sun and ground to a very fine powder. Green clay is rich in trace elements with purifying, mattifying, regenerative and remineralising qualities. It is also ideally suited for oily or a combination skin due to its absorbing properties (the most effective of all clays), with the ability to absorb impurities and excess sebum.

Rich in minerals, the green clay or illite is composed of hydrated aluminium silicate and iron oxide, and contains a large quantity of silicon. This clay is a natural mineral belonging to the phyllosilicate family (similar to talc and mica minerals), and its layered structure results in excellent absorption and concealing properties. It is also able to fix molecules to its surface, once in contact with the skin. The clay re-mineralises and detoxifies the skin by replacing the skin’s impurities and toxins with its own mineral salts. In cosmetics, green clay is usually used as a base for masks, poultices and wraps, for complexion boosters and toning treatments.

Details about the main characteristics and traditional uses have been provided as information here above.

N.B.: The pineapples that LIGNE ST BARTH uses have been fully grown in the West Indies sun. Once perfectly ripened, the pineapples are peeled and cut up by hand before being incorporated into the Cream Mask formula. The combination of pineapple extract and green clay is especially recommended for oily or combination skins, due to its mattifying, purifying and toning effects.

CREAM MASK WITH GREEN CLAY AND PINEAPPLE – PAMPERING TIPS

Mask shine and radiate your full charm

Its absorbing and mattifying properties prevent a shiny face. PASSION FRUIT – PROPERTIES & BENEFITS

The passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) is a climbing plant belonging to the Passifloraceae family, native to Paraguay, Brazil and north-east Argentina. Its name makes reference to the passion of Christ. The religious people who first discovered the plant in South America are believed to have seen the crown of thorns in the spiky tips of the flower.

The passion flower is cultivated for its fruit, and is grown like a vine on a frame in hot regions of the world. The passion fruit itself is known in Creole as maracudja, and maracujá in Brazil. It is also called “pomme-liane” (literally “climbing apples”) in New Caledonia, “grenadia” (due to its resemblance to the pomegranate) in Haiti and “grenadine” on the island of Réunion. In cosmetics, the flesh of the passion fruit is used for its vitamin C content, which is reputed to protect cells against free radicals resulting from pollution and UV rays. It also stimulates the synthesis of collagen (connecting tissue in the skin) and diminishes and prevents skin pigmentation due to the sun or old age.

PINK CLAY – PROPERTIES & BENEFITS

Used for thousands of years, clay is a mild, naturally occurring mineral product. It is the result of a long process of erosion taking place within the natural environment. Produced from the combined action of wind and water, it is extracted from the ground, dried in the sun and ground to a very fine powder. Rich in trace elements, pink clay possesses purifying, clarifying, re-mineralising and toning virtues. Due to its soothing and softening qualities, it is also recommended for delicate, sensitive and reactive skin types.

Rich in minerals, the pink clay or kaolin is composed of hydrated aluminium silicate and iron oxide, and contains a large quantity of silicon. This clay is a natural mineral belonging to the phyllosilicate family (similar to talc and mica minerals), and its layered structure results in excellent absorbing and concealing properties. It is also able to fix molecules to its surface, once in contact with the skin. The clay remineralises and detoxifies the skin by replacing the skin’s impurities and toxins with its own mineral salts. In cosmetics, pink clay is generally used as a base for masks and wraps, for tint boosters and toning treatments.

Details about the main characteristics and traditional uses have been provided as information here above.

N.B.: The combination of passion fruit extract and pink clay is especially recommended for dry, dehydrated and delicate skins, due to its soothing, purifying and firming effects. The inclusion of avocado oil boosts the formula with its nourishing, smoothing and protective virtues.

MANGO – PROPERTIES & BENEFITS

The mango tree (Mangifera indica L.) is an evergreen, native to India and Burma. It is widely cultivated in the Caribbean for its fleshy fruit that is rich in vitamin C and has a sweet, aromatic flavour. The mango was introduced into the West Indies in the 18th century to provide food for the colonists and slaves, and is now grown in many private gardens. Mangos are one of the most commonly eaten fruits in the Caribbean islands.

The very juicy flesh surrounds a flat, smooth stone, in the middle of which is a large almond that contains a creamy, yellowy fat known as mango butter. This precious oily substance, obtained by cold-pressing the stone, boasts emollient virtues. Extremely rich in fatty acids (including isostearic and oleic acids), and containing unsaponifiables (phytosterols, oleic alcohol, squalene and polyphenols), it creates an excellent protective barrier for the skin and helps regenerate the epidermis.

Details about the main characteristics and traditional uses have been provided as information here above.

N.B.: Mango Butter Cream is created using an expert technique by the LIGNE ST BARTH laboratory.  The physical and chemical process reproduces the membrane structure of the skin’s natural barrier. This type of emulsion intrinsically encourages the absorption of the benefits of the ingredients and is better tolerated, particularly by dehydrated and fragile skin. The shea butter, plant-derived squalane and avocado oil included in the formula reinforce the nourishing, moisturizing and protective properties of the mango butter. Shea is also reputed to be regenerative and softening, while calendula extract is soothing and the vitamin E helps prevent ageing.

SUGAR CANE – PROPERTIES & BENEFITS

Sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum) is a tropical plant belonging to the grass family. It is prolific in the West Indies, where it benefits from the sunny climate that is perfect for its growth. It was introduced to the West Indies in the 17th century, with the aim of supplying Europe with sugar. Now the symbolic plant of the Caribbean is widely cultivated to produce sugar for food use, as well for the production of rum. The sugars contained in the stalk of the sugar cane are rich in minerals and nutrients which gives the plant its moisturizing properties.

Details about the main characteristics and traditional uses have been provided as information here above.

N.B.: For the manufacture of its sugar cane extract, LIGNE ST BARTH procures freshly harvested sugar cane from neighbouring islands. This liquid rich in saccharose is extracted from the cylindrical stalk of the plant, and incorporated into the Lip Balm with Sugar Cane. The by-products of sugar that are contained within the formula are reputed to help maintain the skin’s water content, while softening the epidermis and making it suppler. Other natural ingredients, such as coconut and avocado oils, boost the protective virtues of the sugar cane extract and share the beneficial nourishing properties of beeswax. The extract of calendula and bisabolol soothe irritated skin, while avocado oil and beeswax play a protective role, and the vitamin E works as an antioxidant.
